Odzala Odyssey Safari in the Republic of Congo
This Republic of Congo safari takes you deep into Odzala-Kokoua National Park, one of Africa’s most remote, green and fascinating wilderness areas. Over 10 nights, you will move between three beautiful Kamba lodges: Ngaga Lodge, Lango Lodge and Mboko Lodge. Each lodge gives you a different side of the Congo Basin, from gorilla forests and river channels to open baïs, quiet streams and wide savanna.
Unlike a normal safari, this journey feels wilder, wetter, greener and much more intimate. Instead of only watching Africa from a vehicle, you walk through rainforest, kayak along rivers, follow elephant trails, listen to birds in the canopy and track Western lowland gorillas in one of their most important natural habitats.
Your journey includes 4 nights at Ngaga Lodge, 3 nights at Lango Lodge and 3 nights at Mboko Lodge. Three gorilla tracking permits are also included, along with scheduled return flights between Brazzaville and Odzala, all lodge activities, meals, transfers and drinks during the safari.
For travellers looking for something rare, this Republic of Congo safari is a proper adventure. It does not feel polished in the way a classic safari can sometimes feel. Instead, it feels alive, raw, humid, quiet, loud, muddy, beautiful and deeply memorable.
Western Lowland Gorilla Tracking at Ngaga Lodge
Your Republic of Congo safari begins with a scheduled private flight from Brazzaville to Mboko Airstrip in Odzala-Kokoua National Park. After landing, the Kamba team welcomes you, and the adventure starts with a safari drive through savanna and rainforest to Ngaga Lodge.
Ngaga Lodge sits in the Ndzehi Concession, adjoining Odzala-Kokoua National Park. Known for world-class primate research and unforgettable Western lowland gorilla encounters, this area gives the journey a strong sense of purpose. For decades, the research team has studied the forest, its trails and its rhythms, so your time here feels guided by real knowledge, not just a standard safari routine.
During your stay at Ngaga, you will track Western lowland gorillas in the closed-canopy forest around the lodge. Three gorilla tracking permits are included in this 10-night journey. Guests can also enjoy guided forest walks, night walks, sundowners and village visits on request.
This part of the safari is powerful because it slows everything down. You listen more. Then you look harder. Slowly, you start to notice the little things: broken branches, soft forest sounds, distant calls, fresh tracks and sudden movement in the green.
Odzala-Kokoua National Park and Lango Baï
After your final morning at Ngaga, the journey continues through the park towards Lango Lodge. You travel by road to Mboko Lodge, then continue by kayak along the Lekoli River. Along the way, this gentle river safari can bring sightings of monkeys, elephants, forest buffalo and colourful birds along the river edge.
Lango Lodge sits on the edge of Lango Baï, one of the most striking camp settings in Africa. Elevated chalets and wraparound walkways make the most of the view, while the surrounding wetlands, forests and waterways bring you right into the heart of this special ecosystem.
Time at Lango is about getting close to nature. You may walk through streams, baïs and forest paths used by elephants. There may be green pigeons, forest buffalo, shy forest elephants or even the elusive bongo. In the distance, you may also hear chimpanzees calling while your guide explains the plants, animals and quiet signs of life around you.
This stage of your Republic of Congo safari feels adventurous in a very real way. Some moments may be wet. Others may be muddy. That is part of the magic.
Congo Basin Safari Adventure at Mboko Lodge
From Lango, you continue to Mboko Lodge, where the forest meets the savanna. The journey includes a raised wooden walkway through the wetlands and a game drive transfer to camp. After lunch, you can enjoy a forest walk, rest on the river deck or head out on a late afternoon river cruise along the Lékéni River.
Mboko Lodge gives the journey a softer landing, but it still carries a strong wilderness feel. Around the lodge, wide grasslands, gentle rivers and towering forests create a beautiful mix of habitats. With your guide, you can explore riverbanks and forest trails while looking for birdlife, forest elephants, buffalo, monkeys, hippos, spotted hyenas and bongo antelope.
Activities here include walking, boating and kayaking. You can cool your feet in quiet crystal streams, sit on the river deck and watch butterflies, or listen to the water moving past camp. Although it feels peaceful, the forest is never empty. Something is always moving, calling, feeding or hiding.
By the time this Republic of Congo safari reaches Mboko, you have seen Odzala from several sides: the gorilla forest, the baï, the river, the savanna and the softer spaces between them.
Brazzaville Before or After Your Republic of Congo Safari
Brazzaville adds a colourful city experience before or after your time in the Congo Basin. It is a welcoming introduction to the Republic of Congo, with French colonial architecture, broad boulevards, riverside cafés and views across the Congo River towards Kinshasa.
If time allows, guests are recommended to spend two nights in Brazzaville. You can explore restaurants, markets, historic sites, St Anne’s Basilica, Poto-Poto Market, Marché Plateau Ville, Independence Bridge and La Corniche overlooking the Congo River.
For something more cultural, you can also experience Congolese cuisine and the famous Sapeurs, a street-fashion movement known for bold style and deep cultural pride.
